Towards Flexible Autonomy for Swarms in Dynamic and Uncertain Environments
Flexible autonomy for swarm robotics explored how large robot swarms can work effectively with human operators without overwhelming them with the complexity of coordinating many individual robots. Funded by The Alan Turing Institute, the project developed approaches for human–swarm interaction that allow operators to monitor the state of a swarm, understand its autonomous behaviour, and intervene or redirect it when needed, including under limited communication and delayed information. Working with partners including Thales and drawing on disaster-response scenarios, the project helped establish foundations for flexible human–swarm teaming in applications where rapid situational awareness and high levels of autonomy are essential.
